  • Pear aka "Ya Pear", "Shin Li", "Sand Yellow", "Korean Pear", "Green Pear", "Asian Pear", "梨"
  • Pear is a fruit that is usually narrow at the stalk and wider towards the base of the fruit. Asian varieties are usually round like an apple. The skin color depends on the variety, may consist of tan, red, green, and golden brown. The flesh is crisp and juicy with a flavor ranging from tangy to sweet. Let us know which variety you are looking for and we will purvey it for you. Pear is available year-round.
Handling Tip
Selection
  • The pear should be firm without any dark spots and blemishes on the skin.
  • Pick up the pear and gently press your hand against the top of the pear near the stem end. If the top of the fruit still feels firm, you should store the pear. The pear will continue to ripen. If it gives near the top of the pear, the fruit is ripe and ready to eat. If the pear feels soft anywhere else, the fruit is overripe.
Storage
  • The pear should be stored at 32°F - 34°F (0°C - 1°C) with a relative humidity of ninety to ninety-five percent and no mist.
  • The typical shelf life is ten to fifteen days.
  • Pear is sensitive to odor. Do not store pear with any strong aroma item.
  • Pear is sensitive to ethylene, a naturally occurring gas for regulating ripening. Do not store pear with high ethylene-producing products to extend shelf life and avoid loss of color and softening. Depending on the variety, the level of ethylene produced by the fruit is very low to moderate.
